CENTRAL NEW MEXICO BUSINESS OWNERS SHOW
OVERWHELMING SUPPORT FOR THE FREEDOM TO MARRY

The Why Marriage Matters New Mexico project continues efforts to list businesses
and business owners as supporters of equality.

Why Marriage Matters New Mexico released a list of 126 businesses located in Central New Mexico who have pledged their support for equality and the freedom to marry. Areas of focus include Bernalillo, Sandoval, Valencia, Torrance and Socorro counties.

This was the second month of a year-long project to highlight businesses that support the LGBT community. Today’s announcement brings the total number of supportive businesses to 218 in 47 towns. By year’s end, Why Marriage Matters New Mexico plans to have identified such businesses in all 33 New Mexico counties.

Why Marriage Matters New Mexico is a public education project aimed at increasing support for the freedom to marry in New Mexico. Following a 2013 NM Supreme Court ruling affirming the right for same-gender couples to marry, Why Marriage Matters NM works to ensure that same-gender couples’ marriages are respected and welcomed in every corner of the state.

The project will continue through 2014 and is led by a coalition of five local and national organizations:  Equality New Mexico, the ACLU of New Mexico, National Center for Lesbian Rights, Freedom to Marry and ACLU National.

Local business owners are resolved in their support.

“Through marriage and its benefits and protections, same-gender couples have a new sense of security for their families and are able to plan for their futures,” said Maria Griego-Raby, President and CEO of Contract Associates in Albuquerque. “This security directly impacts employee performance in the workplace, and is an important reason why Contract Associates has always supported and celebrates the freedom to marry in New Mexico.”

Cynthia and Richard Spence, owners of Hacienda Vargas Bed and Breakfast Inn and Wedding Chapel in Algodones, weigh in on the economic impact for New Mexico businesses. “The small, intimate, same-gender ceremonies we’ve done were not only a boost to our business, but also spiritually uplifting. Seeing what had been couples for many, many years being finally united, cast a new light for them and for us.”

The Williams Institute of the UCLA School of Law estimates that over the next three years, approximately $15.6 million dollars will be spent in New Mexico as a result of same sex marriage.
